BTW guys, if you in good physical conditions- here is an opportunity to have a trip in USA in summer - moving industry has a hot season every summer in USA (belive me, I working in this industry) and they need Russian (СНГ) students to work as helpers (carring furniture). If you want - go to Google and type keyword - moving.
I suggest that everyone (and especially young women) be extremely careful while considering employment abroad. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Companies usually do not send emissaries to Ukraine looking to fill a well paying and respectable position in the US or Europe.
You can become a victim of human traffikers that entice girls in Ukraine with perspectives of working in a hospitality industry in a Western contry and then taking them to Romania, Montenegro or some other country to work as prostitutes. If they ask you to not tell anyone about this exciting opportunity before you leave, etc. - it's a warning sign.
Even if it's not a scam don't expect to land a cushy job. A manual laborer job usually has low wages, is very hard and you will not have the same labor rights as a citizen of the country you end up at.
There are agencies here in Chicago that are recruiting women from the Eastern Europe to work as baby sitters. Even if it is a reputable agency be prepared for some pretty bad experiences. One family I know hired a babysitter from Bulgaria through such an agency. Once she arrived they took her passport so she could not leave them freely and move to another job even if she was offered one without having legal employment rights.
They treated her well but still she was not free - didn't have a car, didn't have legal papers, etc. Some people may treat you like a slave and if you are not familiar with laws of the host country you may be in trouble.
Don't be discouraged, however - if you are a professional with a valuable skill and experience you have a very good chance to find a well paying position, especially in the US. There are work visas and your chances are pretty good. Once you are in the US the opportunities are endless! This country is beautiful!
If you have questions about employment in the United States or need help preparing a professional resume please let me know and I will help you at no charge.
Otherwise feel free to suggest any topic for discussion. Thanks!

Are here people who want to improve their business-English? I have an intention to create a separate topic for educational purposes. I am a business-English tutor and I may help those who wish to use their English at work to improve it for no fee. As it has been mentioned, I want to create a separate topic here. Do you think, guys, this idea will find support in the mass?

It's been long since last message was added here. I have been living in Ireland for the past 10 years, studied English at home, did twice IELTS exams, ( academic module) achieved 5.5 score band twice, with R-5.0 L-5.5 S-7.0 W -5.5. I really needed to achieve as high as 6.0 (at least) - in order to apply for midwifery into medical school. At home my first spoken language is English, because my husband can only speak English ( little Russian, but not that much). My spoken English - is fluent (I have to say), but I'm really bad at comprehension. Any idea how I can improve my comprehension level?
Any tips much appreciated

Al Capone, hi, maybe it's been late to ask you, but, anyway, I think there is no harm if I do. My husband and I are both Irish Citizen now, he has two Bch's degree ( one back home in banking and finance, and the other one here in an accounting). Due to recession in Ireland ( and all over the World as well) he just couldn't find job in an accounting field. My question is: would that be possible for us to immigrate to US in a future based on his education and skills? What kind of professions are more appreciated in US? I'm working as a health care in a medical grand with more than 4 years experience here. What is current situation in US with employment? Is it possible for us to just travel to US? Or currently situation is not really good? I'm just curious. Our friends immigrated to Canada in 2006 and they are really happy out there. The situation in Ireland wasn't bad few years ago, they were giving job to whole foreigners until country turn down. Now many people here are jobless, and many leaving country to US and Canada because there is no job here. Sad.

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial center. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about 8 million.
London is situated on the river Thames. The city has more than 20 centuries of history. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other.

Hello,

the current situation with jobs in the US is also not very good for many professions, however, accountants and medical professionals are among those usually not having any problems. Let me tell you, there aren't many unemployed accountants and nurses/doctors here!

There are a few caveats, though - to get a well paying job as an accountant a person needs to pass a CPA (certified public accountant) exam which is fairly complex and requires intimate knowledge of the US tax code which is complicated.

You also may have to take some exams as well to confirm your medical qualifications.

You will need a work visa or work certificate to obtain lawful employment in the USA, for that you may need to hire an attorney, unless you get an invitation from an employer in advance which is possible. Medical professionals in the US are in great demand so some companies may sponsor you for an immigrant visa with the possibility to become a US citizen in 5 years.

Also, there are a lot of people of irish descent in Chicago so you will feel right at home. We have very colorful St. Patrick's Day parade every year and plentiful signs of cultural influence from Ireland.

Any further questions - please let me know.

Usually a person first starts to read, then starts to understand what people are saying and finally starts to speak himself/herself. Interestingly in your case it is different, but I think that just listening to the talk radio programs and watching TV will help in no time.

Al Capone, thanks a lot for getting back to me , and for your answer. We are thinking of moving either to US or Canada, but to be honest with you my heart is always goes more to US than any other places ( i don't know why....).
Regarding Irish people in US, I heard that there are too many Irish people moved to America during 1930 - 1980.

P.S. St Patric day - is a big day here, at work our matron always insisting us to wear a shamrock and a green hat

By the way, your English is very good ))) First, when I started to read your posts I thought that English is your firts language.

I'm very slow at reading and understanding what I've read at a limited time, unfortunately. And that's why I nearly failed IELTS test and got only 17 points for reading when I did TOEFL iBT. This is my problem. I was giving only one hour to read a passage of 2000 words (one passage contains 700 to 800 words which should be finished and answered in 20 min!!!) I was given a passage where I had to choice a heading for it, and because time was limited I had to rush, then I couldn't remember all the important info's... and of-cause, at the end I couldn't answer questions properly (((, I mixed up everything and nearly failed that pat. In October I'm going to sit IELTS ( academic) test again, and I don't know how to improve that reading part. Have you got any tips?

There just aren't any secrets, practice makes perfect. Try reading english language books you already read in russian before and know the plot very well. After a while you will pick up many new words without a dictionary, by just figuring out what these words mean in the context of the story.

Try reading detective novels, for example Ed McBain, there are police interrogations that use fairly simple sentences. It will help memorizing entire short passages of conversations and you'll know how to use them without having to memorize rules for building linguistically correct sentences.

I also like US better than Canada but I may be biased. There is no Florida and California, no warm ocean beaches in Canada! I am now vacationing with my family in the Tampa Bay area (West Florida, Gulf of Mexico beaches) and all the canadians are here, they run away from the polar bears up North and bask in Florida sun!

http://forumkiev.com/showthread.php?t=11245

I think most irish immigrated to the US at the end of the 19th century during a paticularly severe food shortages in Ireland.

Thanks. My English is fine since I went to the university here and have been working in the US for almost 20 years. I still have slight accent and most people notice it after several minutes of a conversation.

Al Capone, then no wonder why your English is perfect. Regarding accent, mine is strong Russian, though I'm not pronouncing strong "r" as many eastern european do, but still it's obvious that English isn't my primary language. My kids, they are speaking with an Irish accent, more Dublin accent, but not me Thanks for the tips.
